On Friday, we celebrate St Hilary of Poitiers, who was born in the 4th century and became a Christian after studying the scriptures over a period of time. He was appointed Bishop of Poitiers, but was then exiled for defending orthodox beliefs against a prevailing heresy. He returned to Poitiers where he wrote some of the earliest hymns and became a doctor of the church.
